How I fought Obasanjo from Ghana to become Rivers Governor, Amaechi — highlights the political struggle

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) vice-presidential candidate, Rotimi Amaechi, has revealed how a threat by former President Olusegun Obasanjo forced him to leave Nigeria for Ghana while fighting to become governor of Rivers State.

Amaechi said Obasanjo tried to stop him from becoming governor of Rivers State. He explained that he left Nigeria for Ghana after the former president threatened to have him arrested.

In a video shared on X, Amaechi said he continued his legal battle from Ghana until he eventually became governor.

He made the statement while urging Nigerian youths to take a more active role in the country’s leadership and political affairs.

Amaechi encouraged young people to use their numbers to bring about political change, saying they could become governors, ministers and other leaders.

He also referred to a country where young people reportedly played a major role in removing an established leader, arguing that Nigerian youths could achieve similar results.

“President Obasanjo tried to stop me from being a governor, but you will see that I did not go to sleep. I went to court and when he threatened arrest, I left the country,” Amaechi said.

“I stayed in Ghana and from there I fought that case until I became governor.”

Amaechi also explained the legal dispute surrounding his emergence as governor of Rivers State.

According to him, although the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) won the election, the court recognised him as the party’s lawful candidate, paving the way for him to become governor.

He described his emergence as unusual, saying he became governor through a court ruling rather than a conventional election victory.

Amaechi said young people should not allow political, regional or other considerations to stop them from challenging leaders when necessary.

He urged them to take responsibility for the country’s future instead of remaining silent in the face of political developments.
