Nigeria have suffered a major injury setback ahead of their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying match against Tanzania scheduled for Friday, November 13, 2026.
The setback comes after Italian club AC Milan confirmed that Super Eagles winger Samuel Chukwueze has undergone surgery in London to repair a ruptured tendon in his left hip.
The operation, which was performed by Professor Ernest Schilders in the presence of Dr Stefano Mazzoni, was described as a complete success.
Following the successful surgery, the 27-year-old Nigerian international is expected to return to Italy, where he will begin his rehabilitation programme under the supervision of AC Milan’s medical team.
However, the length of his recovery period has not been disclosed, leaving uncertainty over when he will return to competitive football.
Chukwueze’s injury is a major concern for Nigeria, particularly with the Super Eagles preparing for an important AFCON qualifying encounter against Tanzania.
The winger’s pace, dribbling ability and attacking contributions have made him an important option for the Nigerian national team. His possible absence could affect the team’s attacking plans as they prepare for the crucial fixture.
The former Villarreal player will also miss AC Milan’s Europa League encounter against Ferencváros on Thursday as he begins his recovery from the injury.
Chukwueze joined AC Milan from Villarreal in 2023 after establishing himself as one of the exciting attacking players in Spanish football.
He spent last season on loan at English Premier League side Fulham before returning to the Italian club in the summer.
His time at Fulham gave him another opportunity to gain experience in English football before resuming his career in Italy.
Meanwhile, Nigeria will be hoping that other attacking options remain fit and available as the team prepares for the Tanzania encounter.
The Super Eagles will be looking to secure a positive result in the qualifying campaign as they continue their quest to feature at the 2027 AFCON tournament.
Chukwueze’s recovery timeline will therefore be closely monitored by both AC Milan and the Nigerian national team, with his return expected to depend on his progress during rehabilitation.
