CD Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel Alameda has died aged 30, a day after colliding with an opposition goalkeeper during a match against FC Andorra.
The Spanish club confirmed that the forward died at 8am on Tuesday, November 3, following his admission to intensive care at Nuestra Señora de Candelaria University Hospital.
“We are devastated by grief, with a lump in our throats, and unable to believe this is real,” the club said.
“There are no words of comfort. There is absolutely nothing that can ease this overwhelming sadness.
“We stand alongside his devastated family, his loved ones and the entire Tenerife community, who are mourning this tragic loss.”
De Miguel suffered the collision with Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono during the closing stages of Monday’s Spanish second-tier fixture at the Heliodoro Rodríguez López stadium.
The teams were level at 2–2 when Owono rushed out to challenge for a long ball and collided with the striker, leaving him motionless on the pitch.
Players urgently called for medical assistance. De Miguel received treatment before being taken to hospital by ambulance, while the match was abandoned. Owono was sent off.
Tenerife initially said the striker was stable despite the severity of his condition. However, an update issued in the early hours of Tuesday disclosed that his neurological condition had worsened.
His family thanked everyone who had sent messages of support and requested privacy during their bereavement.
Andorra also expressed condolences to his family, teammates and Tenerife following the announcement.
