President Bola Tinubu has fulfilled his promise to pay Nigeria’s Super Falcons $100,000 each after the team won the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.
The players have started receiving the money, which is worth about ₦140 million in total, 16 months after the President made the promise.Tinubu announced the reward at a reception for the team at the State House in Abuja on July 28, 2025, two days after the Super Falcons defeated hosts Morocco 3-2 in the final.
The Nigerian team came from two goals down to win the match and claim their 10th WAFCON title, extending their record as Africa’s most successful women’s national team.
The National Sports Commission (NSC) announced the payment in a statement issued in Abuja on Monday. The statement was signed by Kola Daniel, Special Assistant on Media to the Commission’s Director-General.
Super Falcons captain Rasheedat Ajibade thanked the President for keeping his promise. She described the payment as recognition of the team’s achievement and contribution to Nigerian sports.
The payment follows a similar reward promised by the Tinubu administration to D’Tigress after Nigeria won the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket tournament.
The NSC, led by Chairman Shehu Dikko and Director-General Bukola Olopade, praised Tinubu for fulfilling his promise. The Commission said the reward would encourage athletes and recognise sporting excellence.
It added that the administration’s support for national teams also included improving athletes’ welfare, providing opportunities for international exposure and hosting major sporting competitions.
Tinubu’s payment fulfils the promise he made after the Super Falcons’ historic victory, although the players had to wait 16 months to receive the reward.
The victory in Morocco secured Nigeria’s 10th WAFCON title and strengthened the Super Falcons’ position as Africa’s most successful women’s national team.
