A tanker has been damaged after an unknown projectile struck the vessel in the Strait of Hormuz, according to a British maritime security agency.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) disclosed the incident on Sunday, saying the projectile hit the vessel’s engine room.

The crew were unharmed and no environmental impact had been reported following the attack, the agency said.

UKMTO did not specify when the attack occurred, the vessel’s origin or destination, or whether the vessel was carrying oil or liquefied natural gas.

The agency also did not identify the source of the projectile or attribute responsibility for the attack.

The incident comes amid continued tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, a major shipping route through which about one-fifth of global oil and gas supplies passed before the ongoing conflict.

The waterway has been a major point of contention in negotiations between Iran and the United States, with attacks on commercial vessels reported in recent weeks.
