Real Madrid scored three late goals to come from two goals behind and beat Roma 4-3 in a thrilling UEFA Champions League match at the Stadio Olimpico on Wednesday.
Madrid were trailing 3-1 with only seven minutes left, but goals from substitutes Carlos Espí and Endrick brought them back into the game before Antonio Rüdiger scored the winner in the 90th minute.
The victory marked another memorable night for Real Madrid, who showed great determination to secure all three points.
The match was also special for Jose Mourinho, who returned to the Stadio Olimpico as Real Madrid’s manager. Roma fans welcomed their former coach with banners celebrating his achievements during his time at the Italian club.
Mourinho led Roma to the UEFA Europa Conference League title in the 2021-22 season and guided the club to the Europa League final the following season.
Roma started strongly and took the lead in the 20th minute through Marten de Roon, who fired a powerful shot from outside the penalty area after receiving a pass from Matías Soulé.
However, Real Madrid responded five minutes later when Kylian Mbappé scored to make it 1-1. His shot took a deflection off Roma defender Gianluca Mancini before looping over goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini.
Mbappé’s goal was his 72nd in 100 Champions League appearances, taking him past former Real Madrid striker Raúl, who scored 71 goals in the competition.
Roma regained the lead in the 51st minute when Donyell Malen scored after Vinícius Júnior lost possession while attempting a flick. The ball took a deflection off Real Madrid captain Federico Valverde before entering the net.
Malen struck again six minutes later to put Roma 3-1 ahead. Although the goal was initially ruled out for offside, a video assistant referee (VAR) review confirmed that the striker was onside.
With Roma appearing close to victory, the hosts made defensive changes to protect their lead. However, Real Madrid took advantage of the closing stages to produce a remarkable comeback.
Carlos Espí reduced the deficit in the 83rd minute, scoring from a rebound after goalkeeper Gollini had saved Endrick’s header.
Two minutes later, Endrick headed home a corner from Arda Güler to level the score at 3-3.
Real Madrid completed their comeback in the 90th minute when Rüdiger volleyed home from close range following another Güler corner.
The late goals secured a dramatic victory for Madrid and left the Roma players and supporters disappointed after their side had looked set for a comfortable win.
Jude Bellingham was named Player of the Match, receiving an average rating of 8.24.
The result means Real Madrid have won both of their Champions League matches so far, while Roma have one point from a draw and a defeat.
Real Madrid will now look to maintain their strong start to the competition as they continue their campaign for another European title.
