Aston Villa recorded an impressive 6-0 victory over Fenerbahce in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday to claim their first home win of the season.
Villa delivered a strong performance at Villa Park, scoring three goals in the first half before adding three more after the break. The match was watched by the Prince of Wales.
Johan Manzambi opened the scoring in the 12th minute when his deflected shot beat Fenerbahce goalkeeper Ederson. The goal was a special birthday present for Manzambi, who turned 21 on the day.
Nicolas Jackson doubled Villa’s lead in the 31st minute with a low finish after receiving good support from his teammates.
Jackson scored again in the 39th minute to make it 3-0 before half-time. He took advantage of poor defending from Fenerbahce to score his fourth goal in three matches.
Fenerbahce had a few chances of their own, but Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki made important saves to keep the visitors from getting back into the game.
After the break, Villa continued to dominate their opponents.
Ross Barkley scored from the penalty spot in the 68th minute after Manzambi was brought down by Ismail Yuksek inside the penalty area.
Barkley added another goal four minutes later when his shot from outside the box took a deflection and went into the net, extending Villa’s lead to 5-0.
Tammy Abraham completed the scoring in the 90th minute, tapping the ball into the net to seal a convincing victory.
The result gives Villa confidence as they continue their Champions League campaign under manager Unai Emery.
Villa have already beaten Club Brugge in their opening European match. Another victory against Viking next week would improve their chances of qualifying for the next stage of the competition.
The emphatic win also ended Villa’s wait for a home victory this season and gave their supporters plenty to celebrate.
