Spanish football giants Real Madrid have demanded the immediate resignation of LaLiga president Javier Tebas following controversial remarks comparing the club’s communication tactics to propaganda methods used in Nazi Germany.
The club described the comparison as deeply offensive and unacceptable, accusing Tebas of conduct incompatible with his leadership responsibilities in Spanish football.
In a statement released on Friday, October 16, Real Madrid called for Tebas to step down as both LaLiga president and vice-president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation.
The confrontation followed comments by Tebas suggesting that Real Madrid’s management and television channel used communication strategies resembling those associated with Joseph Goebbels, Nazi Germany’s propaganda minister.
Tebas had accused the club of repeatedly promoting favourable narratives, highlighting grievances and portraying perceived opponents as enemies.
He argued that the approach recalled propaganda techniques involving systematic repetition, the creation of enemies and the manipulation of narratives.
However, the LaLiga chief clarified that his comparison concerned communication methods rather than Nazi ideology or Real Madrid supporters.
The explanation failed to satisfy the Spanish club.
“Real Madrid CF considers it absolutely intolerable and extraordinarily serious that someone holding two positions of utmost responsibility in Spanish football resorts to a comparison with the propaganda methods of the Nazi regime to discredit our club, its management, and its television,” the statement read.
The club insisted that Tebas’ clarification did not diminish the gravity of his remarks, describing them as morally repugnant and unworthy of a senior football administrator.
Real Madrid further accused him of repeatedly targeting the club, its president and its media outlets.
The dispute also reignited tensions surrounding the Negreira case, which concerns payments made by Barcelona to a former vice-president of Spain’s Technical Committee of Referees.
Real Madrid criticised what it considered an inadequate institutional response to the controversy, revealing that it had approached UEFA to seek a comprehensive investigation into the payments.
The club also demanded sweeping reforms of Spain’s refereeing system and relevant football administration structures.
According to Madrid, Tebas’ conduct demonstrated a lack of neutrality and impartiality necessary for someone occupying such influential positions.
“Consequently, Real Madrid demands his immediate resignation as president of LaLiga and vice-president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation,” the statement concluded.
The latest confrontation marks another escalation in the long-running tensions between Real Madrid and the LaLiga leadership.
