Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) defeated Manchester City 4-2 at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night in the UEFA Champions League after delivering an impressive performance.
The reigning European champions dominated the first half, scoring three goals to put City under serious pressure. Although Manchester City fought back after the break, PSG scored a fourth goal to secure the victory.
Desire Doue opened the scoring for PSG in the 13th minute with a low shot that beat Manchester City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Two minutes later, Doue turned provider, delivering a fine cross that Ousmane Dembele headed into the net to give PSG a 2-0 lead.
PSG continued to control the game, and Vitinha scored their third goal in the 32nd minute. The goal followed a good combination between Maghnes Akliouche and Warren Zaire-Emery.
Manchester City struggled to cope with PSG’s attacking play and went into the half-time break trailing 3-0.
City manager Enzo Maresca made three substitutions at half-time in an attempt to change the direction of the match.
The changes improved City’s performance, and Erling Haaland reduced the deficit in the 53rd minute with a headed finish from Iliman Ndiaye’s cross.
However, PSG restored their three-goal advantage in the 62nd minute. Akliouche’s shot was initially saved by Donnarumma, but the ball slipped behind the goalkeeper and crossed the line.
Haaland scored his second goal of the night in the 75th minute, giving Manchester City renewed hope of making a comeback.
The Norwegian striker nearly completed his hat-trick, but PSG goalkeeper Matvei Safonov produced an excellent save to deny him.
City continued to push forward, but their hopes of a late comeback suffered another setback when Donnarumma saved Ferran Torres’ penalty.
Despite City’s improved performance in the second half, PSG held on to win 4-2.
Haaland shines despite City’s defeat
Haaland was one of Manchester City’s best performers, scoring twice and creating several dangerous moments in front of goal.
However, City’s defensive problems proved costly, as PSG took advantage of their mistakes to score four goals.
Donnarumma also endured a difficult night against his former club, making mistakes that contributed to PSG’s goals, although he later saved Torres’ penalty.
The defeat was a disappointing result for Manchester City, who were unable to stop PSG’s impressive attacking display.
The match was also notable for the return of former City manager Pep Guardiola to the Etihad Stadium, where he watched his former team struggle against the European champions.
