The Class of 1976 of Lagos City College, Sabo, Yaba, Lagos State, is to reward exceptional students, give medical care to teachers and give more support to the college in celebration of 50 years of their graduation.
The set, which is a part of the Lagos City College Old Students Association (LACOSSA), gave the assurance at a news conference in Lagos on Monday.
The Chairman of the 50th Anniversary Planning Committee, Mr Dave Nwanze, said that the set would reward outstanding students of the college in science, arts and commercial studies during the golden jubilee.
He said that the celebration began with the news conference.
Nwanze said the anniversary celebration, with the theme, ‘Uncommon Grace’, would also feature mentorship lectures on ‘Path to Success’.
He said that the class would carry out a medical outreach for teachers to improve their health.
He added that the class would inaugurate some projects and hold an inter-religious thanksgiving service as part of the celebration.
He said that rewarding the exceptional students would motivate the others to improve in their academics.
He said the entire alumni had been supporting the college but the class decided to give the support at the moment to celebrate its 50 years of graduation.
“As alumni of this college, we are supporting government’s efforts to make learning materials available.
“We rehabilitated the physics, chemistry and biology laboratories,” he said.
Nwanze said the association would continue to support public education through interventions, advocacy for improved facilities and better treatment of teachers.
He said that the celebration would end with a gala night on Saturday.
Nwanze said the golden jubilee would enable members of the class to reflect on their lives in the past five decades and thank God for their journeys.
A member of the class and Secretary of LACCOSA, Mr Olukayode Adeegbe, said that the class was determined to give more to its alma mater.
Adeegbe expressed satisfaction that some of them had become professors, and other highly-skilled professionals.
Prof. Taiwo Ajala, also a member of the class, noted that the class took into consideration the needs of the school before arriving at what to donate.
He praised teachers for nurturing future leaders, praying that they would be supported and rewarded adequately.
Mr Saheed Sanyaolu, also a member of the class, said that teachers deserved better recognition and working conditions.
“Teachers should enjoy the benefits of their labour here on earth too, because they see their efforts manifest in medicine, science, law and other professions,” Sanyaolu said.
Mrs Mary Awoniyi, also a member of the class, said that the celebration would be an opportunity for the members to reunite.
According to her, some members of the class have not seen themselves since they graduated from the school. (NAN)
