The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has urged Nigerians to learn from the outcome of Tuesday’s US midterm elections by voting out the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.
The party said the American elections, which it described as a political tsunami against the ruling Republican Party, demonstrated how voters could use their ballots to hold governments accountable for unpopular policies and poor leadership.
In a statement on Wednesday, ADC National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, said the outcome underscored the power of ordinary citizens in a democracy, insisting that no president or political party was bigger than the electorate.
“Americans have shown that when politicians become arrogant, when policies punish ordinary people, and when those in power mistake popularity for a permanent licence to govern, the ballot box remains the ultimate instrument of accountability,” the party said.
The ADC argued that Nigerian voters should prioritise their welfare over political sentiments, loyalties and personality cults, particularly after what it described as years of economic hardship, worsening insecurity and dwindling opportunities under President Bola Tinubu’s APC administration.
It challenged Nigerians to reject what it called the contradiction of complaining about economic hardship and insecurity while voting for the same political leadership responsible for their suffering.
“We cannot continue to complain about the cost of living while voting for a President who has made life unaffordable. We cannot demand security while rewarding failure,” the statement said.
The opposition party described the 2027 elections as a defining moment for Nigerians, urging voters to turn out massively and use their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) to effect political change.
It said the ADC and its candidates were offering an alternative agenda built around making Nigeria affordable and safe, as well as creating employment opportunities for citizens.
“If Americans can use their votes to demand better, Nigerians can do the same. In 2027, let our votes speak louder than the APC-induced suffering,” Abdullahi said.
