Tinubu: Dele Cole’s contributions to Nigeria will endure

President Bola Tinubu has expressed sadness over the death of Ambassador Patrick Dele Cole, describing the late diplomat, journalist and politician as a distinguished public servant whose contributions to Nigeria’s development would remain part of the country’s history.

Cole died at the age of 86.

Tinubu conveyed his condolences in a statement issued by the State House on Saturday, October 17, 2026, in which he paid tribute to Cole’s contributions to journalism, diplomacy and public service.

The President said the late ambassador devoted his life to national service, distinguishing himself in various fields.

“His career reflected the enduring value of dialogue, tact, mutual respect and the pursuit of shared interests in advancing national development and international cooperation,” Tinubu said.

The President particularly highlighted Cole’s contributions to Nigeria’s media industry, noting that he upheld the responsibility of the press to hold public officials accountable and strengthen democratic governance.

Cole served as Managing Director of the Daily Times, one of Nigeria’s prominent newspaper organisations.

Tinubu said Cole upheld the vital role of the media in “speaking truth to power” and promoting accountability in public office.

“His legacy in journalism and public life remains an enduring part of our national story,” the President added.

According to Tinubu, Cole witnessed defining moments in Nigeria’s history and contributed to the country’s development through his work in journalism, diplomacy and public service.

He said the late diplomat’s life demonstrated the importance of experience, principled engagement and commitment to the public good.

The President extended his condolences to Cole’s family, friends, professional associates and others affected by his death.

“As we mourn his passing, I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, professional associates and all whose lives he touched. I pray that memories of his remarkable life will bring them comfort and strength at this difficult time,” he said.

Tinubu also prayed for the repose of Cole’s soul and strength for his family and other mourners to bear the loss.
