Super Falcons coach Augustine Eguavoen has revealed that goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie could play as a central defender for Nigeria in the 2028 Olympic qualifiers.
Eguavoen made this known after Nigeria defeated Comoros 2-0 in the first leg of their second round qualifying match on Friday in Ikenne-Remo.
The Super Falcons struggled to score in the first half but took the lead three minutes after the break through Michelle Alozie, who scored from close range.
Uchenna Kanu sealed the victory in the 60th minute with a header to give Nigeria a two goal advantage ahead of the return leg.
Nigeria have been forced to consider changes in central defence following the absence of Oluwatosin Demehin and the retirement of Osinachi Ohale from international football.
As a result, Eguavoen deployed midfielder Christy Ucheibe as a central defender despite her usual role in midfield.
Speaking after the match, the coach said Ucheibe could continue in the position but also suggested that Nnadozie could be used in defence if necessary.
Eguavoen explained that he values players who can perform in different positions because it gives the team more options.
He said Demehin was unavailable, while Ohale had already decided to retire from international football despite his efforts to convince her to stay.
The coach added that Ucheibe had the qualities needed to play in different positions and that the team had discussed her new role.
He also praised the versatility of his squad, saying the ability of players to perform in multiple positions could give Nigeria an advantage.
On the possibility of using Nnadozie as a central defender, Eguavoen said the goalkeeper had the technical ability to handle the role.
He noted that her performances with the ball during training had shown that she could play in the position if required.
Nigeria will now look to build on their first leg victory as they continue their campaign to qualify for the 2028 Olympic Games.
