The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Osun State Secretariat, has investigated complaint by a corps member following a viral video in which he raised concerns over his experience at the General Hospital, Iwo.
The corps member, Olaode Testimony (OS/26B/1746), serving in Ayedire Local Government Area of the state, had posted the video online alongside his friend, Olusegun Victor (OS/26A/5334), who also serves in the same local government.
In the video, they alleged that they were unable to access medical attention at the hospital.
Olaode stated that they visited the General Hospital, Iwo, at about 10:05 p.m. after reportedly experiencing symptoms of food poisoning but were unable to receive medical attention.
However, during an investigation by the NYSC Osun State Secretariat, the corps member clarified that they were received by a security personnel who directed them to a nurse, but the nurse was unable to attend to them.
He further disclosed that his friend had received medical attention at the same hospital earlier that afternoon.
Following their unsuccessful attempt to obtain medical attention, the corps members proceeded to a pharmacy in Iwo, where they eventually received assistance.
The investigation also revealed that the corps member did not utilise the established NYSC communication channels for reporting emergencies. He had neither contacted his Local Government Inspector (LGI), Zonal Inspector, Corps Liaison Officer nor the State Coordinator, whose contact details were provided during the orientation course to facilitate prompt assistance in emergency situations.
Speaking during the investigation, the LGI explained that the corps member could have contacted him for immediate guidance and assistance. He added that, upon receiving such a report, he would have directed the corps members to Bowen University Teaching Hospital, Iwo, to ensure they received the necessary medical attention.
Following the outcome of the investigation, the corps members concerned have been issued queries by the Corps Inspection and Monitoring Branch, while the matter has been referred to the Corps Disciplinary Committee for necessary action.
