The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has deployed multiple pumping machines to drain water around the submerged wreckage of a military aircraft that crashed in Igbokoda, Ondo State, killing 25 people, as difficult underwater conditions continue to hamper recovery efforts.
The main wreckage remains deeply embedded in the riverbed, making it difficult for recovery teams to gain access to the aircraft and proceed with the operation.
In a statement issued on Friday and signed by Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, Director of Public Relations and Information at NAF Headquarters, the Air Force described the deployment of pumping equipment as a critical step towards accessing the wreckage and advancing recovery operations.
“The ongoing deployment of pumping equipment represents an important step towards facilitating the next phase of recovery,” the statement said.
The NAF acknowledged that the depth of the wreckage, the condition of the riverbed and the difficult underwater terrain had complicated the operation, requiring specialised technical support and careful coordination.
It said recovery personnel remained committed to retrieving the wreckage while prioritising their safety and maintaining respect for the victims.
The latest development comes amid concerns raised by residents of Igbokoda over the possible impact of the recovery operation on their water supply, following complaints about foul-smelling water in the community.
The Air Force said the Air Officer Commanding, Tactical Air Command, Air Vice Marshal MC Ekwueme, visited Igbokoda on the directive of the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, to engage community leaders and residents over their concerns.
During the visit, Ekwueme acknowledged the complaints and assured residents that the NAF was committed to addressing the issues.
The service also thanked the community for its patience and cooperation as recovery operations continued.
Meanwhile, the Chief of the Air Staff reaffirmed the NAF’s commitment to supporting the families of those killed in the crash.
According to the statement, applicable entitlements, including benevolent funds, scholarships for eligible children and other approved welfare benefits, would be processed for the affected families.
The Air Force said it remained in contact with the bereaved families and had established a dedicated helpline at its headquarters to facilitate access to information about the incident and the support available to them.
It pledged to sustain recovery operations, continue providing assistance to the affected families and issue verified updates as significant developments emerge.
