Joshua told to bring in Mike Tyson to beat Fury

Former world boxing champion George Groves has advised Anthony Joshua to recruit legendary heavyweight Mike Tyson to help him prepare for his highly anticipated showdown with Tyson Fury.

Groves believes the Nigerian-born British boxer needs a different fighting strategy to overcome Fury when the two former heavyweight champions meet on December 11 at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales.

Speaking to Grosvenor Sport, the former super-middleweight champion suggested that Joshua could benefit from adopting the famous fighting style that helped Tyson dominate the heavyweight division.

According to Groves, Tyson’s experience of defeating taller opponents could prove invaluable against Fury, who enjoys a height and reach advantage over Joshua.

“I think Anthony Joshua should bring Mike Tyson in to come up with the plan to beat Tyson Fury,” Groves said.

He explained that Joshua should consider adopting Tyson’s renowned peekaboo boxing technique, which relies on head movement, defensive positioning and explosive attacks from close range.

The approach would require Joshua to crouch more frequently, slip punches and move forward aggressively before delivering powerful hooks and uppercuts.

Groves argued that the strategy could help Joshua close the distance and neutralise Fury’s physical advantage.

Although Joshua is himself a tall heavyweight, the former champion believes he must adapt his approach to deal with the larger Fury.

Groves noted that Mike Tyson built a remarkable career defeating opponents who regularly enjoyed advantages in height and reach.

He maintained that seeking tactical advice from the former undisputed heavyweight champion would therefore make sense.

The recommendation comes as Joshua prepares for one of the biggest fights of his career.

Both fighters are heading into the December encounter following victories in their previous outings.

Fury defeated Polish veteran Mariusz Wach, while Joshua recovered from two knockdowns to stop Kristian Prenga.

Despite Joshua’s victory, questions remain about his ability to withstand Fury’s size, movement and punching accuracy.

Groves considers Fury the favourite but believes Tyson’s experience could offer Joshua a different approach to the contest.

The proposed involvement of Tyson remains a recommendation, with no indication that Joshua has approached the boxing legend or that any coaching arrangement has been agreed.

The December 11 fight, which will be streamed worldwide on Netflix, is expected to settle one of British boxing’s longest-running rivalries.
