Liverpool defeated Brighton and Hove Albion 2-0 at Anfield, with Alexander Isak scoring the second goal after Pascal Gross scored an own goal to give the home side the lead.
Liverpool took the lead through Gross’ own goal after a shot from Florian Wirtz was deflected into the net. Isak then doubled Liverpool’s advantage four minutes later to secure all three points for the hosts.
According to BBC Sport’s player ratings, Bradley Barcola and Wirtz were among Liverpool’s best performers, both receiving ratings of eight out of 10 from the reporter.
Barcola impressed with his attacking play and provided the assist for Isak’s goal. He caused Brighton’s defence problems throughout the match and came close to scoring himself.
Wirtz also delivered an impressive performance, creating several problems for Brighton with his movement and attacking play. His effort led to the opening goal, although Gross was officially credited with an own goal after the ball deflected off him.
Isak scored his sixth Premier League goal of the season with a simple finish after receiving a pass from Barcola. Although the striker has yet to reach his best form, his recent goal record remains encouraging for Liverpool.
Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker had little work to do in the first half but nearly gifted Brighton a goal with a careless pass. Yasin Ayari struck the post during the visitors’ attempts to get back into the game.
Liverpool’s defence remained strong, with Virgil van Dijk, Jeremy Jacquet and Ronald Araujo helping the team keep a clean sheet.
Araujo was particularly impressive, combining strong defending with an important contribution to the build-up to the opening goal.
BBC Sport’s reporter gave Barcola and Wirtz ratings of eight, while Isak, Araujo, Van Dijk, Jacquet and several other Liverpool players received seven out of 10.
For Brighton, Diego Gomez was one of the standout performers, earning a rating of seven. He created opportunities for his teammates and linked up well with Joao Costinha.
Ayari also showed promise but missed a major opportunity when the match was still goalless. He later hit the post, as Brighton struggled to turn their chances into goals.
Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen made several good saves but could not prevent Liverpool from scoring twice.
Gross received a rating of five after his unfortunate own goal, while defender Olivier Boscagli was rated four after struggling against Barcola and losing possession before Liverpool’s second goal.
Brighton made several substitutions in an attempt to change the course of the match, but Liverpool maintained their advantage until the final whistle.
The victory gave Liverpool another clean sheet in the Premier League, while Brighton were left to reflect on missed chances and defensive mistakes that proved costly at Anfield.
