Igbogbo/Baiyeku Local Council Development Area (LCDA) on Friday honoured 200 elderly residents and retirees at its maiden Senior Citizens’ Appreciation Day for their contributions to community development.

The event, held at the council secretariat, was organised to recognise the sacrifices, wisdom and years of service of the beneficiaries.

Mr Hammed Aroyewun, Chairman of the LCDA, said the initiative was designed to appreciate older residents for their roles in laying the foundation for the community’s development.

“Our senior citizens are invaluable members of our community. Their sacrifices, experience and wisdom have contributed immensely to the progress we are witnessing today.

“This programme is our modest way of expressing gratitude to them and assuring them that their contributions to society will not be forgotten,” he said.

Aroyewun expressed delight at the beneficiaries’ enthusiasm, assuring them that his administration would continue to introduce programmes to improve their welfare.

He attributed the initiative to President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, saying the Federal Government’s policy direction continued to inspire interventions to improve Nigerians’ lives.

The chairman also urged the senior citizens to remain politically active and mobilise support for All Progressives Congress (APC) candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Earlier, Mrs Otun Anuoluwapo, Head of the council’s Department of Agriculture, said the programme was conceived to recognise elderly residents for their enduring contributions to Igbogbo/Baiyeku’s growth and development.

She said the initiative acknowledged the important roles the beneficiaries had played in building the community.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mrs Oluwatoyin Fayoyiwa, a retiree, commended the chairman for organising the event.

Fayoyiwa, who said she had lived in the community for 40 years, described the programme as unprecedented in her experience.

“I have lived in this community for 40 years, and I have never witnessed this kind of programme dedicated to celebrating senior citizens.

“I sincerely appreciate the chairman and his team for remembering us and making us feel valued.

“This recognition means a lot to us,” she said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the event featured the recognition of elderly residents and the distribution of food items to the beneficiaries. (NAN)
