FIFA Rankings: Super Falcons tumble, drop seven places

4 hours ago 1

Nigeria’s Super Falcons have dropped seven places in the latest FIFA women’s world rankings released on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, but remain the highest ranked team in Africa.

The 10 time African champions fell from 36th to 43rd position globally following a series of disappointing results in recent competitions.

Despite the decline, Nigeria maintained its position as Africa’s number one women’s national team, ahead of South Africa, Morocco, Ghana and Zambia, who occupy the second to fifth positions on the continent, respectively.

The Super Falcons’ drop in the global rankings comes after a disappointing campaign at the 2026 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations in Morocco, where they were eliminated in the quarter finals following defeats to Malawi and Cameroon.

Nigeria also suffered a 2-1 loss to South Africa in the playoffs for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

However, the team recorded two victories over Comoros in the qualifiers for the 2028 Olympic Games, providing some encouragement amid their recent struggles.

On the global stage, Spain retained the top position in the latest rankings, ahead of the United States, Germany, England and Japan, with no changes among the top five teams.

The Super Falcons will be hoping to improve their position in subsequent rankings as they prepare for upcoming international competitions.

The next FIFA women’s world rankings are scheduled for release on Monday, December 7, 2026.
