The Federal Government has attributed the recent decline in electricity supply across Lagos, Abuja, Ogun, Kwara and Oyo states to gas supply constraints, reduced hydroelectric generation and maintenance issues, insisting that the disruptions are not linked to any major failure of the national grid.

The Federal Ministry of Power disclosed this in a statement signed by Adeola Adelabu, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe.

The Ministry said preliminary assessments showed that the reduced supply stemmed from operational and maintenance challenges across parts of the power sector, alongside declining electricity generation caused by inadequate gas supply to thermal power stations and lower water inflows into hydroelectric reservoirs.

It noted that the affected areas had recently recorded noticeable improvements in electricity supply before the latest disruptions, which have caused inconvenience to households, businesses and public institutions.

Acknowledging public concerns over the development, the Ministry said it understood the frustration of Nigerians who had begun to experience more stable electricity supply.

It added that the Minister was working with the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) and electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) to address the challenges and restore normal supply.

According to the Ministry, Tegbe has engaged the relevant operators to resolve the operational constraints, accelerate ongoing maintenance and ensure that the public receives regular updates on restoration efforts.

The Ministry assured Nigerians that the government remained committed to sustaining recent improvements in the power sector and strengthening the reliability and quality of electricity supply nationwide.

It also appealed for public patience and understanding, promising to provide further updates as efforts to restore supply progress.
