Dr Mories Atoki, Chief Executive Officer, African Business Coalition for Health, has called for a review of Nigeria’s health education curriculum to reflect technological advances.
She made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday at the 2026 Management Retreat of the Lagos State College of Health Technology, Lekki, Lagos State.
NAN reports that the event has the theme, “Unlocking the Strategies and Structure for Actualising Sustainable Development for Lagos State College of Health Technology.”
Atoki, the keynote speaker at the event, said urgent reforms required assessing existing policies and ensuring strict adherence to those supporting health education.
She said the country must also examine how technological developments were affecting health education and how to prepare for the future of healthcare.
“As a nation, we need to go back to the drawing board to assess our curriculum and our educational system as a whole, particularly in health,” she said.
She said Nigeria should ensure that its health education system could be benchmarked against those of other emerging economies.
Atoki urged the country to assess existing policies while remaining vigilant about technological changes and their implications for health education.
She called for greater integration of health technology and computer-based approaches into educational systems, from primary to tertiary institutions.
“We want to be sure that we are not just living in history or living in the old era,” she added.
She recommended curriculum reviews to ensure that they remained relevant to current realities.
Atoki said leaders of health technology institutions must embrace change and move beyond relying on outdated frameworks.
According to her, students must understand global healthcare expectations, remain proactive, seek support when necessary, and challenge the status quo to enhance their competitiveness.(NAN)
