Depleted Super Eagles fight back to hold Russia in six-goal thriller

A depleted Super Eagles side staged a dramatic late comeback to force Russia to a 3-3 draw in an entertaining international friendly in Nizhny Novgorod on Tuesday.

Nigeria took an early lead through Kelechi Iheanacho, who struck in the 10th minute after being set up by Abdullahi Bewene.

Russia responded strongly, with Lechi Sadulaev restoring parity in the 30th minute before Matvey Kislyak put the hosts ahead in first-half stoppage time.

The Russians extended their advantage nine minutes into the second half when Alexey Miranchuk made it 3-1, leaving Nigeria facing defeat after surrendering control of the contest.

But the Super Eagles produced a spirited response in the closing stages.

Substitute Peter Edokpolor pulled one back in the 78th minute, giving Nigeria renewed hope.

The comeback was completed deep into stoppage time when Akor Adams struck in the fourth minute of added time, converting an assist from Abubakar Umar to secure a 3-3 draw.

The result extended Nigeria’s unbeaten record against Russia in their two most recent meetings, following a 1-1 draw in Moscow in June 2025.

Nigeria’s late recovery was particularly notable given the team’s struggles to create opportunities for much of the contest. Russia enjoyed 63 per cent possession, produced 17 shots and registered three big chances, compared with Nigeria’s 10 shots and one big chance.

Edokpolor’s introduction proved influential, while Adams delivered the decisive moment with virtually the final attack of the match.
