A gathering marking the sixth anniversary of the #EndSARS protests at the Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos was reportedly disrupted by tear gas on Tuesday, with governorship candidates of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and African Democratic Congress (ADC) among those present.

The NDC governorship candidate, Funso Doherty, his running mate, Tolani Animashaun, and the ADC governorship candidate, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, were among those who gathered at the historic location to commemorate the October 20, 2020, #EndSARS incident.

Animashaun confirmed the reported tear-gassing in a message to P.M. NEWS shortly after the incident, saying she and others at the toll gate had been exposed to tear gas.

A video obtained by P.M. NEWS showed police officers addressing the crowd at the scene following the reported incident.

However, the footage did not capture the deployment of tear gas, and the circumstances surrounding the incident were not immediately clear.

The gathering took place on the sixth anniversary of the October 20, 2020, Lekki Toll Gate shooting, which occurred during nationwide demonstrations against police brutality.

Tuesday’s incident comes as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, with Doherty and Rhodes-Vivour seeking the Lagos governorship on different party platforms.

As of the time of filing this report, the Lagos State Police Command had not issued an official explanation regarding the reported tear-gassing.
