The All Progressives Congress (APC) has launched a scathing attack on former Rivers State Governor and African Democratic Congress (ADC) vice-presidential candidate, Rotimi Amaechi, over his claim that financial difficulties prevented him from affording medications for his late mother.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday by its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, the APC expressed condolences over the death of Amaechi’s mother, Dame Ezinne Mary Oduah Amaechi, while sarcastically praying that her son would find employment capable of supporting himself and his family.

The party said it was praying for “excellent health of mind and body” for Amaechi, whom it described as a former two-term Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, two-term governor, two-term Minister of Transportation and former presidential aspirant.

Amaechi is currently the vice-presidential candidate of the ADC ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The APC said it found it difficult to reconcile Amaechi’s reported financial situation with his long years in public office.

“Rotimi Amaechi’s uncanny confessions must not be missed. First, he howled that he had become so broke and hungry that his wife was now feeding him. Now, he has stated that his inability to afford medications killed his mother at 89,” the statement said.

The ruling party argued that Amaechi had spent about four decades occupying prominent public positions, during which, it claimed, he was able to meet his personal and family needs.

It questioned how he could become financially distressed only a few years after leaving public office.

“For four decades, Rotimi Amaechi freeloaded at the highest levels of public office. He was never hungry and could afford medications for himself and his family,” the APC alleged.

“Just three years out of office, he has become destitute, unable to fend for himself and his loved ones.”

The party further accused Amaechi of being dependent on public office and questioned his suitability for higher political office.

It said if Amaechi could not sustain himself and his family outside government, he should not seek the office of vice-president.

“The presidency is not a soup kitchen, and will not be a soup kitchen for Rotimi Amaechi,” the APC declared.

The party concluded that Amaechi’s own comments about his financial circumstances amounted to evidence of his alleged unfitness for the vice-presidency.

“There can be no better speaker of Rotimi Amaechi’s unfitness for the office of vice president than Rotimi Amaechi himself,” the APC said.
