Lawyer and activist Deji Adeyanju has called on President Bola Tinubu and the Inspector-General of Police to investigate the attack on supporters of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Enugu State and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
The attack occurred on Saturday, October 10, 2026, during the campaign flag-off of the party’s governorship candidate, Sir Christian Chinyeaka Ohaa.
The incident reportedly unfolded in two phases, first at Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, and later at Ohaa’s campaign office in the Government Reserved Area (GRA) of the state capital.
The attack reportedly left at least one person dead and several others injured. The victim was identified as Nwolle Christopher.
The NDC accused suspected political thugs of attacking its supporters, alleging that the assailants operated under the protection of policemen attached to the state government.
In a statement signed by Hon. Sampson Ukwu, media aide to Ohaa made available to THE WHISTLER, the party said thousands of its members, supporters of the Obidient Movement and members of the Kwankwasiya group had gathered at the airport to welcome the governorship candidate when the violence broke out.
Reacting to the incident on Wednesday, Adeyanju condemned the killing and warned that political intolerance posed a threat to Nigeria’s democracy and citizens’ fundamental freedoms.
“Political intolerance threatens our democracy and undermines the fundamental freedoms upon which our nation is built,” he said.
Adeyanju stressed that political affiliation should never be a reason for anyone to lose their life.
“No Nigerian should lose their life because of their political affiliation. Political differences must never be settled with bullets,” he added.
He urged Tinubu and the Inspector-General of Police to ensure that the circumstances surrounding the incident were thoroughly investigated and that those responsible were brought to justice.
