The Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba, Abia State, has recorded an 80 per cent reduction in its electricity cost since the institution was connected to Aba Power.

This was disclosed on Tuesday, by the Rector of Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Okoro Christopher while fielding questions from journalists on the performance of Aba Power since the polytechnic was connected to the national grid.

“The improved electricity supply had significantly reduced the institution’s dependence on generators and the costs associated with diesel and generator maintenance,” The rector said.

He explained that before the connection, the institution could spend within a week what should ordinarily have covered its electricity needs for a month.

According to him, the reduction in power expenditure has eased the financial burden on the institution and created room for resources to be deployed to other areas of need.

Okoro also said the improved electricity supply had reduced pollution associated with prolonged generator use within the institution.

He said the development had contributed to a more conducive environment for teaching, learning and administrative activities at the polytechnic.

The Rector said the experience demonstrated the importance of reliable electricity supply to tertiary institutions, particularly those that previously depended heavily on generators to power their operations.
