Abia Police, INEC, Parties Sign Peace Accord

The Abia State Police Command, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), other security agencies and representatives of registered political parties have signed a peace accord ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The accord was signed on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, during a meeting convened by the Commissioner of Police, CP Wilfred Olutokunbo Afolabi, at the Police Officers’ Mess, Umuahia.

The meeting brought together the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Abia State, heads of sister security agencies, representatives of political parties and campaign teams to discuss measures for ensuring peaceful political activities before, during and after the elections.

Proceedings featured a presentation on electoral laws by the Officer-in-Charge of the Legal Unit of the Abia State Police Command, while the REC urged political stakeholders to abide by the law.

The electoral chief also reaffirmed INEC’s commitment to conducting free, fair and credible elections in the state.

Addressing participants, Afolabi assured political parties, candidates and their supporters of adequate, professional and impartial security coverage throughout the electioneering period.

He highlighted the command’s security measures, including intelligence gathering and analysis, crime mapping, the revitalisation of the Cybercrime Unit and improved operational and emergency response mechanisms, in line with the vision of the Inspector-General of Police.

The police commissioner also acknowledged Governor Alex Otti’s directive on providing adequate security for political campaigns and related activities.

He cautioned political parties and their supporters against violence, intimidation, inflammatory statements and the destruction of property, warning against actions capable of undermining the peace and security of the state.

Afolabi further urged political parties and campaign organisations to notify the police in writing before holding rallies, processions and other political events to enable the command to make appropriate security arrangements.

The memorandum of the peace accord was subsequently read by the Officer-in-Charge of the Legal Unit, after which representatives of the political parties signed the document individually, pledging their commitment to peaceful political participation.

The Abia State Police Command said it would continue to collaborate with INEC, other security agencies and political stakeholders to protect lives and property and ensure a peaceful, secure and orderly electoral process before, during and after the 2027 general elections.
