The Abia State Government has clarified that the State House of Assembly has passed the State Police Bill, dismissing reports suggesting that the legislation is yet to be approved.
The government described the reports circulating across some media platforms as inaccurate and misleading, insisting that they do not reflect the true position of events in the state.
In a statement signed by Ukoha Njoku Ukoha, Chief Secretary to the governor , the government said, “For the avoidance of doubt, the Abia State House of Assembly has since passed the State Police Bill, in line with the constitutional reform process and the commitment of the state to strengthening community-based policing and enhancing the security of lives and property.”
It added that the passage of the bill demonstrated Abia State’s readiness to embrace the proposed state policing arrangement.
“The passage of the Bill was a clear demonstration of Abia State’s readiness and proactive stance on State policing, as championed by the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR,” the statement said.
The government urged members of the public, media practitioners and other stakeholders to disregard the report and rely on verified information from official government channels.
It further reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and accurate public communication, noting that it would continue to work with the Federal Government and other states to ensure the successful implementation of state police in Nigeria.
The statement also urged media organisations to uphold professional standards by verifying information before publication.
“The media is further enjoined to always verify facts before publication to avoid misleading the public,” the government stated.
