‎The Chinese community in Nigeria has donated eight laptops to Nigerian teachers to support education and strengthen Nigeria-China relations.

‎A member of the community, Ming Zhao, disclosed this during the 2026 World Teachers’ Day celebration on Monday in Abuja.

‎Zhao described the donation as a practical expression of appreciation for teachers and their contributions to national development.

‎“Teachers are the backbone of society. Their influence goes beyond the classroom to shaping knowledge, values and the next generation of citizens,” he said.

‎He said his appreciation of teachers was also personal, recalling that his mother and grandfather were both teachers.

‎According to him, teachers need adequate support and tools to perform their duties effectively, given their contributions to national development.

‎Zhao said the eight laptops were presented as part of the community’s contribution to the celebration and its efforts to support education in Nigeria.

‎He recalled previous interventions by members of the Chinese community in Nigerian schools, including the donation of educational materials and participation in tree-planting activities.

‎”This gesture is aimed at supporting the education sector and strengthening relations between Nigerians and the Chinese community,”he said.

‎The donation coincided with the 2026 World Teachers’ Day, celebrated globally on Oct. 5.

‎The 2026 celebration marks 60 years since the adoption of the 1966 International Labour Organisation (ILO)/United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers.

‎The framework addresses teachers’ rights and responsibilities, professional preparation, recruitment, employment and working conditions.

‎The global theme for the celebration is “Standing with Teachers: 60 Years of Protecting the Profession, Advancing Its Status and Shaping Our Futures.”

‎The observance highlights the need for governments, policymakers and society to strengthen the teaching profession and address challenges, including changing technological demands, workload, working conditions and limited professional support.‎(NAN)
