Truck Crashes Into Buses

Five passengers, including a driver, have sustained critical injuries after a 40-foot HOWO truck rammed into two commercial buses at Berger Bus Stop, inward Kara Bridge, along the Ojodu axis of Lagos State.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday, adding that the accident involved an interstate commercial Mazda bus and a Toyota Hiace bus conveying passengers.

According to the agency, the truck was travelling out of Lagos when it crashed into the two commercial buses, leaving several occupants seriously injured.

LASTMA operatives stationed around the Ojodu–Berger axis promptly responded to the incident and rescued five critically injured passengers, comprising three females and two males, including the driver.

The victims were subsequently evacuated and transported by motorists, accompanied by LASTMA officials, to the Lagos State Emergency and Trauma Centre at the Toll Gate for immediate medical attention.

Security personnel from Isheri Police Station also provided support during the rescue operation.

The accident caused significant traffic congestion along the affected corridor, with vehicle queues extending backwards to Otedola Bridge.

However, LASTMA officials deployed to the area managed traffic and coordinated efforts to ease the congestion while the rescue operation was ongoing.

The agency said its operatives also evacuated the vehicles involved in the crash from the carriageway to prevent secondary accidents and restore the free flow of traffic.

The vehicles were subsequently handed over to the police for further investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision and any necessary legal action.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed sympathy with the injured passengers and wished them a speedy and complete recovery.

Bakare-Oki emphasised the importance of responsible driving, compliance with road safety regulations and regular maintenance of heavy-duty vehicles.

He warned that mechanical faults, reckless driving and loss of vehicular control could lead to serious road accidents, particularly along major highways.

The agency urged operators of articulated trucks and other heavy-duty vehicles to prioritise roadworthiness, exercise caution and remain vigilant while driving.

LASTMA also called on motorists to comply with traffic directives issued by its officials to enhance road safety and prevent avoidable accidents.
