The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board(JAMB) has urged universities to desist from issuing admission letters to candidates, saying it is not within their mandate to do so.
The Registrar, Prof. Segun Aina, gave the charge when he received a delegation from Veritas University, Bwari, Abuja, which paid him a courtesy visit.
Aina said JAMB remains the only body statutorily empowered to issue official admission letters to candidates seeking entry into all tertiary institutions in Nigeria, including universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.
He noted that candidates often believe any document emanating from an institution offering them admission is genuine, and urged universities engaged in the act to stop and ensure candidates obtain the right documents from the Board.
He recalled that the Federal Ministry of Education had mandated that all admissions be conducted through the Central Admissions Processing System, adding that anything done contrary to that is illegal and invalid.
According to him, no institution is permitted to substitute its own letters for the official JAMB admission letter issued after a candidate has accepted admission on CAPS, as only admissions offered through the platform are recognised for mobilisation for the National Youth Service Corps, among others.
“As a consequence, no institution is permitted to substitute its own letters for the official JAMB admission letter issued by the Board after a candidate had accepted his admission on CAPS,” he said.
The Board had continuously warned candidates against accepting admission offers outside its Central Admissions Processing System, saying such offers may not be recognised as valid.
“An admission offered by an institution outside the approved JAMB admission process may not be recognised as valid.
“Accepting such an offer could put your academic journey at risk and create complications with your admission records and related processes,” the board had warned.
