The Super Eagles were left to pick up the pieces on Tuesday after a painful 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau in their Africa Cup of Nations qualifying clash.

For Nigeria, what began as another opportunity to strengthen their campaign ended in disappointment, frustration and a scoreline that offered little room for excuses.

Guinea-Bissau struck first in the 15th minute, with Franculino putting the hosts ahead after being set up by Renato Nhaga.

Nigeria had more than enough time to respond. Instead, the first half ended with the Super Eagles trailing 1-0, leaving them with the task of producing a second-half comeback.

Changes were made immediately after the interval. Moses Usor replaced Frank Onyeka, while Moses Simon came on for Taiwo Awoniyi as Nigeria searched for a way back into the contest.

But the breakthrough never came.

Instead, the night grew increasingly painful for the Super Eagles.

In the 66th minute, Mama Baldé doubled Guinea-Bissau’s lead, with Manadi Camara providing the assist.

Nigeria made further changes in an attempt to alter the course of the match. Ademola Lookman was replaced by Toluwalase Arokodare, while Akor Adams and Wilfred Ndidi later made way for George Ilenikhena and Raphael Onyedika.

Nothing, however, could prevent the hosts from holding their advantage.

Then came the final blow. With Nigerian hopes already fading and the clock deep into stoppage time, Alvaro Djalo struck again in the 95th minute after receiving the ball from Tamble.

The final whistle confirmed a defeat that will sting deeply for the Super Eagles and their supporters.

Nigeria had entered the match with expectations of a strong performance, but instead found themselves chasing a game they could never regain control of.

The 3-0 scoreline tells the starkest part of the story: Guinea-Bissau scored in the 15th, 66th and 95th minutes, while Nigeria failed to find the net throughout the contest.

For the Super Eagles, there was no late rescue, no dramatic comeback and no consolation goal to soften the blow.

There was only the painful reality of watching Guinea-Bissau celebrate a convincing victory while Nigeria were left to contemplate a night that went disastrously wrong.
