Uganda have strengthened their goalkeeping department with the addition of two Nigerian goalkeepers, Akpan David Udoh and Kingdom Osayi, who are eligible to represent the East African country through their maternal family ties.
Udoh was part of the Nigerian team that won the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup alongside Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen.
According to the Uganda Football Federation, Udoh is eligible to represent Uganda because his maternal grandmother was born in the country.
The goalkeeper has now made the switch to Uganda, ending his association with Nigeria at international level.
The second goalkeeper called up by Uganda is Kingdom Osayi, who gained recognition in the Nigerian domestic league during his time with Doma United.
Osayi was particularly praised for his impressive performances and ability to keep clean sheets during his spell with the Nigerian club.
Like Udoh, Osayi is eligible to represent Uganda through his maternal lineage, as his maternal grandmother was born in the country.
The inclusion of the two goalkeepers gives Uganda additional options between the posts as they continue to strengthen their national team.
Both Udoh and Osayi will now have the opportunity to represent Uganda at international level, despite previously being associated with Nigerian football.
Their switches highlight the growing trend of African national teams recruiting players with family ties to countries other than those where they were born or developed their careers.
Uganda will hope the two Nigerian-born goalkeepers can bring their experience and quality to the national team as they prepare for upcoming international assignments.
