Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to bring down Iran’s Islamic Republic, saying he has directed the country’s security agencies to pursue the goal and that Israel could act independently of the United States if necessary.
Netanyahu made the remarks on Sunday during a rare security briefing with Israeli journalists at his office in Jerusalem, days before Israel’s October 27 parliamentary election.
“The regime must fall, and I will bring it down,” Netanyahu said.
He said he had issued a directive to the country’s security agencies to work towards the collapse of the Iranian government, describing regime change as a central objective of Israel’s security strategy.
“Our plan is a very comprehensive and very determined plan to bring about the fall of the regime. That is my plan. That is the directive I have given all the security agencies, and that is what will happen,” he said.
Netanyahu also claimed that 90 per cent of the work required to defeat Israel’s enemies had already been completed, linking the completion of the remaining objectives to the outcome of the forthcoming election.
Asked whether Israel could pursue its objectives against Iran without Washington’s backing, he said the country’s security needs were not dependent on American approval.
“Insofar as it is necessary, we will also act independently. We have already done so, and if necessary, we will do so again,” he said.
The Israeli leader maintained that Iran’s nuclear ambitions remained among the principal threats facing his country, arguing that toppling the government in Tehran was necessary to address the broader danger.
His remarks come after Israeli military campaigns against Iran and its regional allies in 2025 and 2026 failed to bring down the Islamic Republic’s government.
The briefing also comes amid heightened political debate ahead of Israel’s October 27 election, with Netanyahu presenting the vote as a decision on whether the country would complete its military objectives under his leadership.
