Youth and student leaders in Kogi State have commended Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo for approving a 100 per cent increase in the monthly subvention to youth and student organisations, saying the decision will strengthen their operations and improve their contributions to the state’s development.
The leaders made the commendation on Tuesday during a press conference at the OJN Foundation Secretariat, Zone 8 Roundabout, Lokoja, where representatives of various youth and student organisations welcomed the governor’s approval.
They said the increase would provide beneficiary organisations with additional resources to address operational challenges, implement programmes and discharge their responsibilities more effectively.
The press conference was attended by executives and representatives of the National Association of Kogi State Students (NAKOSS), National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Joint Campus Council (JCC), National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Kogi State Chapter, Nigeria Youth Congress (NYC), Association of Nigerian Female Students (ANFS), Kogi State Chapter, Kogi State Youth Parliament and other youth groups.
Speaking at the event, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Youth and Student Matters, Hon. Oladele John Nihi, said the approval reflected the administration’s commitment to youth empowerment and the strengthening of organisations representing young people across the state.
Nihi explained that the increased funding would help address some of the financial and administrative difficulties facing youth and student bodies, while enabling them to expand their activities in areas such as student welfare, leadership development, policy advocacy and community engagement.
He added that providing institutional support to youth organisations would encourage greater participation in governance and strengthen their capacity to contribute to policy discussions and development initiatives.
In their separate remarks, the youth and student leaders expressed appreciation to Ododo for approving the increase, pledging to ensure that the additional resources were used responsibly.
They promised to uphold transparency and accountability in managing the funds, adding that the increased subvention would come with greater responsibility to deliver meaningful results for their members.
The leaders also called on young people across the state to maintain constructive engagement with the government and support initiatives capable of promoting peace, unity and development.
They described the approval as an important step towards strengthening youth representation and ensuring that student and youth organisations had the resources required to fulfil their mandates.
The groups further called for sustained government investment in student welfare, youth empowerment and policies that promote inclusive governance.
They maintained that the increased subvention would serve as motivation for youth and student organisations to improve their performance, strengthen their internal structures and contribute more actively to the development of Kogi State.
