A 20-year-old man, Lawisi Safiyanu, has allegedly stabbed one Muhammad Abba to death following a disagreement over an outstanding N500 debt in Jigawa State.

The incident occurred around 12:30am on October 1, 2026, at Chamo village in Dutse Local Government Area of the state.

According to the Jigawa State Police Command, Abba had bought a mobile phone from Safiyanu for N1,500 but paid N1,000, leaving a balance of N500.

The unpaid debt reportedly led to an argument between the two men, which escalated when Safiyanu allegedly stabbed Abba with a knife.

Abba was taken to Rashid Shekoni Teaching Hospital, Dutse, where he died while receiving treatment.

The police said Safiyanu was arrested and the knife allegedly used in the attack was recovered.

The command said investigation had been completed and the suspect charged to court.

In a separate incident, a 27-year-old man, Abbas Ibrahim, allegedly set fire to the room of his elder brother, 25-year-old Basiru Shuaibu, after pouring petrol inside.

Basiru and his wife reportedly sustained serious burns in the incident.

Relatives took the couple to a traditional medicine practitioner for treatment, but Basiru later died from his injuries.

The police said Ibrahim was subsequently arrested in Sara town, Gwaram Local Government Area, and is being investigated at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Dutse.

The suspect claimed to be of unsound mind.

The command said both cases had been brought before the courts for prosecution.

The Commissioner of Police, Jigawa State Command, CP Tijjani Murtala, urged residents to avoid taking the law into their own hands and promptly report threats, suspicious activities and disputes to security agencies.
