The Federal Government has warned contractors handling railway projects against installing poor-quality components, directing them to prioritise durable equipment and facilities that can be maintained locally.
The warning is part of efforts to ensure that railway infrastructure delivers long-term value, reduces maintenance costs and remains operational after being handed over to the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC).
The Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Transportation, Funso Adebiyi, gave the directive during a recent inspection of the Kano-Maradi railway project.
Adebiyi expressed concern over the use of components that wear out quickly, stressing that contractors must install equipment capable of withstanding sustained use and meeting internationally accepted standards.
He specifically directed contractors to install lighting systems with a minimum service life of three years.
He also said equipment, including customised lamp holders and motorised maintenance tools, must be suitable for local servicing and replacement to avoid unnecessary dependence on foreign technical support.
For railway terminals with extensive glass structures, Adebiyi directed contractors to provide mechanised cleaning equipment and take into account the effects of temperature changes on the buildings.
He further warned against designing railway facilities that depend excessively on diesel generators or expensive energy systems that could become difficult to sustain.
The permanent secretary said contractors must also ensure that young Nigerian engineers acquire the technical skills required to operate and maintain railway infrastructure before the facilities are handed over to the NRC.
As part of the initiative, he directed the NRC Managing Director, Dr Kayode Opeifa, to select qualified young engineers for an intensive, month-long practical training programme.
The programme is expected to equip participants with the skills required to manage railway and terminal facilities, replace worn-out com
