Fenerbahce came from behind to secure a dramatic 3-2 victory over Liverpool in their UEFA Champions League league-phase encounter on Wednesday.
Vedat Muriqi scored the decisive goal in the 79th minute.
Liverpool took an early lead through 18-year-old Trey Nyoni, but Fenerbahce fought back to claim all three points in a pulsating contest that saw the hosts recover from a second-half deficit.
Nyoni opened the scoring in the 25th minute with a well-struck first-time effort from just outside the penalty area, putting Liverpool ahead after a spell of pressure.
Fenerbahce responded four minutes later when Mason Greenwood’s free-kick took a deflection off a defender and found its way into the net, leaving goalkeeper Alisson Becker stranded.
The Turkish side had an opportunity to take the lead before the break, but Irfan Kahveci’s volley in the 27th minute struck the crossbar.
Liverpool regained the advantage in the 69th minute when Alexander Isak rose to meet a lofted cross from Cody Gakpo and headed the ball past goalkeeper Ederson to make it 2-1.
However, Fenerbahce refused to surrender. Archie Brown capitalised on a defensive error in the 73rd minute, calmly rolling the ball into the net from close range to restore parity.
The hosts completed their comeback six minutes later. Brown delivered a lofted pass into the penalty area, and Muriqi reacted quickly to fire past Alisson and give Fenerbahce a 3-2 lead.
Liverpool pushed desperately for an equaliser in the closing stages. Virgil van Dijk came close with a header in the 82nd minute, but Ederson produced a save to deny him.
The visitors also squandered a golden opportunity in stoppage time when Van Dijk found himself through on goal following a short pass from Cody Gakpo, but his effort sailed over the crossbar.
Fenerbahce held on through the remaining minutes to complete an impressive comeback and hand Liverpool a painful defeat in the Champions League.
