Real Madrid fans have questioned Vinícius Júnior’s place in the team following another impressive performance by Ivorian winger Yan Diomande, who stole the spotlight in the Spanish giants’ 4–1 victory over Sevilla on Sunday.
Diomande delivered a memorable display at the Santiago Bernabéu, scoring a spectacular goal and providing an assist as Real Madrid cruised to victory in their La Liga encounter.
His performance has intensified the debate over whether the young winger should retain his place in the starting line-up ahead of Vinícius, whose recent form has come under scrutiny.
Vinícius missed the encounter through suspension, giving Diomande an opportunity to demonstrate his qualities on the left flank. The Ivorian seized the moment, producing an attacking display that strengthened calls among supporters for him to remain in the starting eleven.
According to reports, Diomande played a key role in Madrid’s attacking performance, combining pace, direct running and clinical finishing to trouble Sevilla’s defence.
The 19-year-old capped his impressive outing with a powerful strike late in the game, driving forward before firing into the top corner to complete Madrid’s emphatic victory.
His contribution came after an assist earlier in the match, further underlining his growing influence in José Mourinho’s side.
Diomande’s latest display has reignited discussions among Real Madrid supporters about the competition for the left-wing position.
Some fans believe the Ivorian deserves an extended run in the starting line-up, arguing that his performances have demonstrated his readiness to take on greater responsibility.
Others have pointed to Vinícius’s inconsistent form this season, suggesting that his reputation should not guarantee him a starting place.
The debate is not entirely new. Diomande attracted attention in September after an impressive performance for Ivory Coast against Ghana in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match. His movement, dribbling and ability to create chances prompted some supporters to suggest that he could challenge Vinícius for the left-wing position.
The competition has since intensified, particularly following Diomande’s recent contributions in domestic football.

Vinícius remains one of Real Madrid’s most recognisable attacking players, but his recent performances have attracted criticism from sections of the club’s support.
The Brazilian was also involved in controversy during Madrid’s 1–0 victory over Villarreal earlier in October. After coming on as a substitute, he was sent off following an incident involving Villarreal defender Nathan Saliba, resulting in a four-match suspension.
The suspension ruled him out of the Sevilla encounter and the forthcoming El Clásico against Barcelona, creating further opportunities for Diomande to establish himself.
Meanwhile, Madrid’s convincing victory over Sevilla offered Mourinho encouraging signs about the depth of his attacking options.
Kylian Mbappé scored twice, while Arda Güler opened the scoring and Diomande rounded off the victory with his spectacular finish. The result also strengthened Madrid’s momentum ahead of their highly anticipated meeting with Barcelona.
For Diomande, the challenge now is to maintain his impressive form and convince Mourinho that he deserves a regular starting role.
For Vinícius, the task will be to return from suspension and demonstrate that he remains indispensable to Madrid’s attacking plans.
With competition for places intensifying at the Bernabéu, Diomande’s emergence has raised a compelling question among supporters: could the young Ivorian’s performances eventually displace one of Madrid’s established stars?
