The Enugu State House of Assembly, Tuesday, backed the creation of the state police to enhance internal security across the state.
THE WHISTLER reports that the House passed the resolution during plenary.
According to a Facebook post by the Speaker, Mr Uche Ugwu, members of the House voted in support of the bill seeking the alteration of the Nigerian constitution to provide for establishment of the state police.
Ugwu, representing Udi North State Constituency, wrote that, “This will go a long way in addressing the issues surrounding our internal security.”
Ugwu reported that the lawmakers expressed satisfaction with the vision of the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government and the leadership of the party by supporting state police creation, describing the development as the “heartbeat of Nigerians”.
Our correspondent reports that with the approval, Enugu State becomes the first state in the Southeast region of Nigeria to have endorsed state police creation.
Analysts have been divided in their support for state police creation. While some hold the view that state governors might use state police to intimidate opposition, others argue that the high rate of crimes across the country makes state police a necessity.
