Former President Goodluck Jonathan has told politicians to put Nigeria first before party loyalty.
Jonathan spoke on Tuesday at the 5th National Conference of the Forum of Former Deputy Governors of Nigeria in Abuja. He was represented by former Deputy Governor of Adamawa State, Bala Ngilari.
The ex-President said division along ethnic, religious and regional lines is still a major problem holding Nigeria back.
Jonathan said Nigeria must always be bigger than any political party, individual or sectional interest.

"One major obstacle to Nigeria's political development is division along ethnic, religious and regional lines. We must rise above these differences and promote politics founded on competence, integrity, inclusion and national interest," he said.
He told the former deputy governors to use their experience to promote national unity and mentor young politicians.
According to him, as someone who served as deputy governor and governor of Bayelsa before becoming Vice President and President, he understands the challenges of the office.
"The experience teaches patience, loyalty, consultation and teamwork. Above all, it reminds us that governance is not about one individual but about strong institutions and service to the people," Jonathan added.
